"I think teasing out the contradictions in Apple's public position versus the actual technical truth is really critical. As a programmer, nothing frustrates me more than seeing bad policy attributed to technical necessity when it's very clearly not."
This response to “the App Store does business like a grocery store”—hint: it doesn’t—is just about perfect. (There’s like a dozen different grocery chains and a whole lot of other options, which is the _entire point_. Also, retail margins are nowhere near 30% minus whatever Apple actually spends.)
Anyhoo, "free" ≠ "without regulations."
I mean, I'm not entirely sure what to think of this. Part of the big chains being able to drive out mom-and-pop stores is customer convenience, I guess, and competitive prices. And I'm all for convenience and low prices. Which is exactly why we need a _free_ market, not Big Tech Oligarchy.
I'll probably never understand why folks oppose "big government" yet shrug at monopolies like this, which aren't democracies _at all_. "Vote with your feet," sure, but what when all reasonable alternatives are gone? "Google delivers the traffic for the whole internet. Unless your name is Facebook, you rely on Google." https://themarkup.org/google-the-giant/2020/07/28/google-search-results-prioritize-google-products-over-competitors
Coffee would come out everywhere except were it should. (I.e., success.)
I've not yet checked any of my other sites ...
So, my (shared) server went down today, and my WordPress database seems to have gotten corrupted. Only reason I know is I’ve secretly got `WP_DEBUG_LOG` enabled at all times. Kept getting a “Please DISCARD the tablespace before IMPORT” while it was apparently trying to recreate a table that got orphaned. Restored a backup, tried to manually recreate two smallish posts, lost a single webmention. 🤷
I’m the one weirdo that uses Custom Post Types for their IndieWeb post types. Makes for a very neatly organized WP Admin.
Seems it doesn't support query parameters, which makes sense, obviously. There's a popular and now abandoned package for pretty pagination URLs, but an extra route, a custom middleware and a custom paginator should do the trick just fine!
